Get Up & Go: Backstage with Norman Rizzi
Norm Rizzi was Scenic Artist in Charge for San Francisco Opera productions, and a scenic designer for the San Francisco Ballet. He also worked in Jewish theater. Trained in theater and fine arts, he worked on Broadway for shows like Fiddler on the Roof. Norm brings a fascinating perspective on what goes on behind the curtain through a video review of modern productions of musicals and operas, with lots of wonderful musical examples. By comparing video clips of different productions of the same opera or musical, Norm will show how to look at a musical show or opera for its visual production as well as its music. Registration Required.
Get Up & Go: Fiddler on the Roof and Jerome Robbins
Popular performer Steve Gill and his troupe present a glimpse into the background of Jerome Robbins and his iconic musical. In 1959, Robbins returned to the shtetl where he had visited his grandfather 35 years earlier. He found nothing left; it had been liquidated. But the memory and the meaning caused Robbins to give the musical village of Anatevka to the world. Steve Gill as Tevye, Feeta Bishop as Golde and Robert Feiner on Mandolin bring us the music of the show and fascinating information about Jerome Robbins and the creation of this well-loved musical. Registration Required.
Get Up & Go: Have a Happy and Healthy Hanukkah
Join Jeannie Solomon, PJCC Nutrition & Wellness Coach for a discussion and food demonstration. During Hanukkah we celebrate the miracle of the menorah burning for eight days from only one flask of oil. For that reason, oil is honored as the centerpiece of the traditional foods we eat during the holiday. From latkes to soofganiyot (Hanukkah doughnuts), in this session we will uncover the healing benefits of cooking with 'healthy' oil and give some old Hanukkah recipes a healthy make-over. Sample will be served, so don't miss this!
