SUMMARY:Let's Talk About It: with SPECIAL GUEST AVI MELAMED of Inside the Middle East
DESCRIPTION:By request\, PJCC’s favorite expert Avi Melamed will join us this week to discuss the war with Iran. \nThe Middle East is entering one of the most dangerous and unpredictable moments in decades. How did the region reach this point — and what might happen next? In this special briefing\, Middle East analyst Avi Melamed explains the regional chain reaction triggered by the October 7 attack and the escalating confrontation between Israel\, Iran\, and Iran’s network of militias across the Middle East. \nTo understand this moment\, Avi offers a powerful analogy: the Second Iran War resembles a high-stakes poker game\, in which Iran\, Israel\, and the Arab Gulf states are each playing their strategic cards while trying to anticipate the moves of their rivals. In clear\, engaging apolitical language\, Avi helps audiences move beyond headlines to understand what the key players are trying to achieve and what the possible outcomes may be of this conflict. \n\nInstructors: David Nigel & Jon Levinson \nLocation: Virtual Zoom Meeting \nEvery Monday

SUMMARY:Food for Thought: Music and the Holocaust
DESCRIPTION:During the Holocaust\, music provided solace and solidarity. But it was also used as a weapon and as propaganda. We’ll discover the power of music to both inspire resistance to tyranny and serve evil purposes. We’ll also hear how after the war\, music helped keep memory alive through commemoration.  \nEleanor Shapiro received her doctorate from the Graduate Theological Union\, Berkeley\, in 2018\, with a dissertation focused on Jewish culture festivals in Polish small towns.  For thirteen years prior to that\, she directed the Bay Area-based Jewish Music Festival. Currently an independent scholar\, she has recently taught courses on Jewish music\, Polish-Jewish relations\, and Israel/Palestine (where she worked as an educator and journalist from 1982-1990)
