SUMMARY:Get Up & Go/Beth El Senior Friendship Club: Special Passover Program
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever heard the Four Questions chanted in Yiddish or Ladino? Or Chad Gadya\, Echad Mi Yodea\, Adir Hu? These are the traditional songs of Pesach\, sung in Hebrew around the Seder table each year to commemorate the Exodus from Slavery in Egypt. Each year that passes\, we lose more of the native-born speakers who remember singing in the languages of their ancestors who endured a form of slavery in the Diaspora\, and ultimately left their host countries of Spain\, Portugal\, Poland\, Russia\, Turkey\, Greece\, the Balkans\, and Morocco for Israel and the United States. \n\n\n\nMark Levy has been singing these Yiddish and Ladino versions for many years and now has put together a program for all to hear\, remember\, and enjoy. Descended from an Ashkenazi (eastern European) mother and a Sephardi (Spanish-Jewish) father\, Mark combines the beautiful melodies of both traditions together with Hebrew and Israeli songs in a versatile performance that transports the listener to another time and place. \n\n\n\nRegister Here.

SUMMARY:Get Up & Go/Senior Friendship: Holiday Bake and Chat
DESCRIPTION:Get ready for Rosh Hashana (Jewish New Year) by baking an apple pastry while chatting with Rabbi Laurie Matzkin about the High Holidays. \nThe Jewish calendar is luni-solar\, so the holidays begin in the evening\, and continue through nightfall the next day. Rosh Hashanah kicks off with a festive evening meal\, followed by another on the second night of the two-day holiday. Rosh Hashanah celebrates new beginnings\, and what will hopefully be a sweet year\, so foods like honey and apple are important menu features. \nFeel free to bring your recipes to share!
