SUMMARY:Book Discussion: “The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store” by James McBride
DESCRIPTION:In 1972\, when workers in Pottstown\, Pennsylvania\, were digging the foundations for a new development\, the last thing they expected to find was a skeleton at the bottom of a well. Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill\, the dilapidated neighborhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side and shared ambitions and sorrows. Chicken Hill was where Moshe and Chona Ludlow lived when Moshe integrated his theater and where Chona ran the Heaven & Earth Grocery Store. When the state came looking for a deaf boy to institutionalize him\, it was Chona and Nate Timblin\, the Black janitor at Moshe’s theater and the unofficial leader of the Black community on Chicken Hill\, who worked together to keep the boy safe.As these characters’ stories overlap and deepen\, it becomes clear how much the people who live on the margins of white\, Christian America struggle and what they must do to survive. When the truth is finally revealed about what happened on Chicken Hill and the part the town’s white establishment played in it\, McBride shows us that even in dark times\, it is love and community—heaven and earth—that sustain us.Bringing his masterly storytelling skills and his deep faith in humanity to The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store\, James McBride has written a novel as compassionate as Deacon King Kong and as inventive as The Good Lord Bird. \nRegister Here

SUMMARY:Judaism is About Love
DESCRIPTION:In his new book\, “Judaism is About Love\,” Rabbi Shai Held — one of the most important Jewish thinkers in America today — recovers the heart of the Jewish tradition\, offering the radical and moving argument that love belongs as much to Judaism as it does to Christianity. Whether you are well-versed in Jewish teachings or exploring them for the first time\, this transformative conversation is sure to leave you inspired and enriched. \n  \nRabbi Shai Held is President and Dean of the Hadar Institute in New York City. Rabbi Held received the prestigious Covenant Award for Excellence in Jewish Education\, and has been named multiple times to Newsweek’s list of the most influential rabbis in America and to the Forward’s list of the most prominent Jews in the world. He is the author of Abraham Joshua Heschel: The Call of Transcendence (2013) and The Heart of Torah: Essays on the Weekly Torah Portion (2017). His newest book\, Judaism is About Love\, was published in March 2024. \n  \nPJCC is honored to bring Rabbi Shai Held to the North Peninsula. \n\n\n\n\n  \nTestimonials: \n“This is a truly magnificent book\, necessary for our troubled times. Shai Held\, one of Judaism’s leading scholars and thinkers\, rebuts facile stereotypes of Judaism that contrast Jewish law with Christian love\, and demonstrates the centrality of love\, imagination\, and compassion in the Jewish tradition. In this difficult world. Held’s book should be required reading for Jews and non-Jews alike.”– Martha C. Nussbaum\, Distinguished Service Professor of Philosophy and Law\, The University of Chicago \n  \n“There are good thinkers\, there are great thinkers\, and then there are once-in-a generation thinkers like Rabbi Shai Held. Rabbi Held’s astounding and contagious knowledge of his faith\, mixed with his endlessly curious dives into and dialogue with other religious and philosophical traditions\, make him an utterly unique figure in religion and philosophy.” \n– The Rev. Dr. Patricia Lyons\, Senior Advisor to the Dean on Evangelism and Senior Lecturer in Practical Theology at Virginia Theological Seminary \n\n\n  \nPeninsula Temple Beth El1700 Alameda de las Pulgas San Mateo\, CA 94403 \n  \nRegister here

SUMMARY:Antisemitism and Our Democracy
DESCRIPTION:As we face a troubling resurgence of antisemitism\, it is increasingly vital to understand its implications not only for the Jewish community but also for the broader integrity of our democracy. To illuminate this critical connection\, we are excited to host a distinguished panel featuring three influential leaders in the field: \n\nAmy Spitalnick\, CEO of the Jewish Council for Public Affairs (JCPA)\n\n\nDavid Bocarsly\, Executive Director of the Jewish Public Affairs Committee (JPAC)\n\n\nTyler Gregory\, CEO of the Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC)\n\nThis important discussion is grounded in the recently published Antisemitism X Democracy Report\, which illustrates the connections between antisemitism\, other forms of bigotry\, and anti-democratic extremism. \nThe powerful ONE NATION exhibition currently on display in the PJCC gallery serves as a backdrop for this program. Offering a provocative exploration of America through the lens of contemporary artists\, this exhibit prompts essential dialogue about our nation’s past\, present\, and future\, and invites us to reflect on the state of our nation and our hopes for a just future. \nWe look forward to seeing you there!

SUMMARY:Food For Thought: Without Jews There Would Be No (Comic Book) Superheroes
DESCRIPTION:Superman\, Batman and the Fantastic Four were all created by young Jewish men. In fact\, almost all of the original DC and Marvel superheroes\, except Wonder Woman\, were created by Jewish writers and were drawn by Jewish artists. \nWe will discuss the many theories of why this may be true. We will consider why\, until five or ten years ago\, the comic book industry was dominated by Jewish men and women\, as writers\, artists\, pencilers and publishers. We will also look at the Jewish roots for some of these superheroes and supervillains\, and the handful of characters who are identified as Jewish today. \nRabbi Harry Manhoff was ordained at the Hebrew Union College in 1979. He has a BA from Yale\, an MAHL from HUC and a PhD in Religious Studies from the University of California at Santa Barbara. He co-authored A Place In the Tent: Intermarriage and Conservative Judaism regarding intermarriage and acceptance\, and is currently working on a new book.

SUMMARY:Food For Thought: The Real Heroines of Sephardic Culture
DESCRIPTION:Sephardic women have played a heroic role in keeping their culture alive. Thanks to their unshakable commitment and determination\, Sephardic women were at the center of the recovery process after expulsions and exiles\, and managed to not only keep the traditions and customs alive but thriving. \nIn this enlightening new program\, Professor Rivka Amado\, a Sephardic historian\, will explore the role of two groups of Sephardic women: those who fled Spain and Portugal after the expulsion and the conversa women who remained in the Iberian Peninsula and kept the Jewish faith in secret. Through this exploration of the role of these women in Sephardic culture\, we will gain new insights into this important segment of the Jewish community and Judaism as a whole. \nDr. Rivka Amado is a musician and lecturer specializing in Judeo-Spanish music\, culture and history with a focus on Sephardic women’s songs and spiritual experience. \nRegister Here.
