SUMMARY:Food for Thought: Climate Change in an Aging Society
DESCRIPTION:Climate Change in an Aging Society shows ways in which elderly people are high on the scale of victims of extreme weather events: wildfire\, flood\, drought\, and heat. Why do people feel both helpless and hopeless? Why is it that public policy\, at all levels\, does not support resilience? How do we escape passivity and pessimism? It’s not too late and you’re not too old! There are specific actions that individuals – not government policy alone – can do to protect ourselves and safeguard future generations: (1) becoming a climate conscious consumer; (2) investment for a green retirement; and (3) citizen climate action. \nHarry R. Moody is former Vice President and Director of Academic Affairs at AARP Washington and is currently the editor of the popular Human Values in Aging monthly newsletter. In 2011\, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Society on Aging\, and in 2008 he was named by Utne Reader Magazine as one of “50 Visionaries Who Are Changing Your World.” He is the author of Ethics in an Aging Society (1992)\, Abundance of Life: Human Development Policies for an Aging Society (1988)\, and over 100 scholarly articles. He also is the co-author of several other books related to aging. \n\nDate: Tuesday\, August 19th \nTime: 2:00 – 3:00 PM \nLocation: Board Room \nCost: Free | Open to the public

SUMMARY:Peer-to-Peer (P2P): Huipiles and More!
DESCRIPTION:Discover the nonprofit organization\, Friendship Bridge\, and its work that empowers women and eliminates poverty in Guatemala. Learn more about the artistry and Indigenous Mayan symbolism that can be found in traditional Guatemalan women’s clothing\, and how you can help support Guatemalan artisans. \nInstructor: Elizabeth “Betty” Chambers Toguchi\, a retired financial advisor and Guatemalan textile enthusiast. In 2015\, she and her husband Roger were asked to be a part of a fact-finding trip to Guatemala. (Rotary International wanted to donate funds to help the residents around Lake Atitlán recover from Hurricane Stan). She and Roger were part of a team selected to assess the needs of the Mayan people living near and around the lake. On this trip\, she met a Mayan woman for the first time\, who was working in her home on a backstrap loom\, weaving material for a traditional Guatemalan blouse. This experience introduced her to the beauty and variety of Guatemalan textiles. Betty has been a fierce advocate for both textile preservation and the artisans who make them ever since. \n\nLocation: PJCC Boardroom
