SUMMARY:Peer-to-Peer (P2P): Huipiles and More!
DESCRIPTION:Discover the nonprofit organization\, Friendship Bridge\, and its work that empowers women and eliminates poverty in Guatemala. Learn more about the artistry and Indigenous Mayan symbolism that can be found in traditional Guatemalan women’s clothing\, and how you can help support Guatemalan artisans. \nInstructor: Elizabeth “Betty” Chambers Toguchi\, a retired financial advisor and Guatemalan textile enthusiast. In 2015\, she and her husband Roger were asked to be a part of a fact-finding trip to Guatemala. (Rotary International wanted to donate funds to help the residents around Lake Atitlán recover from Hurricane Stan). She and Roger were part of a team selected to assess the needs of the Mayan people living near and around the lake. On this trip\, she met a Mayan woman for the first time\, who was working in her home on a backstrap loom\, weaving material for a traditional Guatemalan blouse. This experience introduced her to the beauty and variety of Guatemalan textiles. Betty has been a fierce advocate for both textile preservation and the artisans who make them ever since. \n\nLocation: PJCC Boardroom

DESCRIPTION:What if the real battleground isn’t just geopolitics\, but meaning? In this talk\, Chama presents a bold framework for narrative deradicalization\, where policy is only as powerful as the stories we tell. Drawing on cultural memory\, identity\, and the Emma Lazarus Institute’s summits for deradicalization\, she invites a reimagining of the Middle East as a space not of collapse\, but of the next civilizational renaissance. \nDrinks and dessert will be available for purchase \nCo-sponsored with Malka Productions\, Jimena\,  and StandWithUs Northern California \nClick here to learn more about Chama’s work and see the full event schedule. \n \n\nLocation: Chez Nous Cafe in Redwood City

SUMMARY:Food for Thought: Jews\, Schmaltz\, and Crisco in the Age of Industrial Food
DESCRIPTION:Crisco has been marketed to Jews as “truly clean and truly kosher.” In the early twentieth century\, Procter & Gamble conducted a series of advertising campaigns to convince Jewish women to change their preferred cooking fats from butter and schmaltz (rendered poultry fat) to Crisco. The success of this early example of targeted marketing reveals how American Jews have changed as religious practitioners and as consumers. Jewish home cooks\, generally women\, were persuaded to relinquish authority to corporate experts not only in matters of cuisine and health\, but also in religious practices related to food production and consumption. Examining Crisco’s targeted advertising to Jews helps us consider who is\, and who should be\, an authority in the modern Jewish kitchen. \nRachel B. Gross is a Professor of American Jewish Studies at San Francisco State University. She is a scholar of religious studies whose work focuses on the lives\, spaces\, and objects of twentieth-century and contemporary American Jews. Dr. Gross received her Ph.D. from Princeton University.
