A variety of projects are available!\n\nWe will start the day by gathering at multiple locations\, where you will meet your project captain and team. After that\, most of the projects will start at their locations shortly after 1:00 pm.  A few projects start at 9:00 am or 10:00 am. \nAfter signing up for your project\, you will receive further information from your project captain the week of January 13th. If needed\, community service forms are available. \nAttending this event is subject to this waiver. \n* Note that registration for this event implies waiver signature. \nVolunteers must register by January 10th. \nProjects fill up quickly\, so register early! Volunteers must sign up in advance\, as we cannot accept walk-ins on the day of the event. SUMMARY:Food For Thought: Without Jews There Would  Be No (Comic Book) Superheroes
DESCRIPTION:Superman\, Batman and the Fantastic Four were all created by young Jewish men. In fact\, almost all of the original DC and Marvel superheroes\, except Wonder Woman\, were created by Jewish writers and were drawn by Jewish artists. \nWe will discuss the many theories of why this may be true. We will consider why\, until five or ten years ago\, the comic book industry was dominated by Jewish men and women\, as writers\, artists\, pencilers and publishers. We will also look at the Jewish roots for some of these superheroes and supervillains\, and the handful of characters who are identified as Jewish today. \nRabbi Harry Manhoff was ordained at the Hebrew Union College in 1979. He has a BA from Yale\, an MAHL from HUC and a PhD in Religious Studies from the University of California at Santa Barbara. He co-authored A Place In the Tent: Intermarriage and Conservative Judaism regarding intermarriage and acceptance\, and is currently working on a new book.
