Dryland Workouts for Swimmers
You know us… we’re swimmers, and we love our water workouts! But we’re also fans of fitness activities that take place outside the pool. Strength-training exercises like the following complement all the hard work you put in when you’re swimming those laps.
1. Exercises such as the plank pose, which focus on your core, are foundational to your overall strength and health. Try out these basic plank exercises, or challenge yourself a bit, if you’re up for it! To execute this move properly, keep your back flat, gently tuck in your chin, and lightly “squeeze” your shoulder blades throughout the exercise.
2. Squats help build your leg muscles—so important for increasing the strength and speed of your kicks! But be careful to use good form: make sure your knees are not bent past your toes.
3. Of course, you want to give your arms, back, shoulders, and chest some attention! Bicep curls, the ever-popular pushup (in its many variations), and chest presses are excellent activities to incorporate into your routine.
If you’re looking to improve your strength and agility in the pool… why not fit some of these simple activities into your workout regimen? (As always, we recommend consulting a doctor prior to starting any workout routine.)
If you’re a PJCC Center Member, you can also make an appointment for a session with one of our personal trainers! Learn more about our personal training packages.

Say hey to Joey, our Lifeguard of the Month!
If Joey looks familiar to you… you’re probably right! He’s been a fixture here at the PJCC for a long time… he was a Center Member right when we opened in Foster City. Plus, he’s a proud graduate of our Aquatics program. This summer, we were excited to welcome him to our Aquatics team as both a lifeguard and a swim instructor.
Another fun fact? Joey has a twin sister!
Joey is currently studying to become a firefighter at the College of San Mateo. When he’s not working hard at school, or here at the PJCC, he enjoys playing the ukulele. Be sure to say hi when you see him in the pool or guarding!
Interested in becoming part of the Aquatics team? We’re looking for dedicated staff to lifeguard, teach swim lessons, and coach our Barracuda youth swim team. No experience is necessary, and we will provide the certification training. The positions include PJCC Center Membership, as well as additional PJCC benefits and discounts. Learn more by contacting Aquatics Manager Gina Livingston at glivingston@pjcc.org.
Pool Resurfacing
The outdoor pool is scheduled to re-open December 9! Please contact the Aquatics office if you have any further questions.
