Have you ever heard the Four Questions chanted in Yiddish or Ladino? Or Chad Gadya, Echad Mi Yodea, Adir Hu? These are the traditional songs of Pesach, sung in Hebrew around the Seder table each year to commemorate the Exodus from Slavery in Egypt. Each year that passes, we lose more of the native-born speakers who remember singing in the languages of their ancestors who endured a form of slavery in the Diaspora, and ultimately left their host countries of Spain, Portugal, Poland, Russia, Turkey, Greece, the Balkans, and Morocco for Israel and the United States.
Mark Levy has been singing these Yiddish and Ladino versions for many years and now has put together a program for all to hear, remember, and enjoy. Descended from an Ashkenazi (eastern European) mother and a Sephardi (Spanish-Jewish) father, Mark combines the beautiful melodies of both traditions together with Hebrew and Israeli songs in a versatile performance that transports the listener to another time and place.
