The Difficult Moral Choices Everyday Heroes Had to Make on October 7

One of the great ethical dilemmas is the question of whether we save ourselves or put others first in an emergency. We’ve all been on flights in which they tell us specifically to put our own mask on before helping others but is that concept applicable during other types of emergencies? On October 7, Israelis were faced with this exact question. Some ran to help their family and friends, some ran to enlist and fight back, and too many had no other choice but to run for their lives. In this moving new program from expert Melton teacher Rabbi Michele Faudem, we will explore the tough choices that had to be made by looking at the essential moral questions: What is our obligation to save others? What type of danger must we subject ourselves in order to save others? Does war change our obligation? Using the Talmud, the book of Esther, Maimonides, and more, we will gain new insights into these age-old questions and grapple with some of the hardest choices that Israelis had to make on that horrific day.
