For over 20 years, Marcyl Seidscher has been the heart and soul behind the beloved Food for Thought (FFT) program at the PJCC, a core monthly lecture series designed for adults. As a volunteer, Marcyl’s dedication has been instrumental in creating a space for learning, conversation, and community engagement. With her characteristic warmth and charm, Marcyl has consistently gathered an average of 15-20 participants each month to enjoy diverse presentations, from authors to artists, often booking notable speakers.
Since taking the helm of FFT, Marcyl has cultivated a vibrant and enlightening experience for the PJCC community. She fondly recalls the times when she brought in fascinating speakers, even when budgets were tight. In one instance, she persuaded a speaker who initially requested a $750 fee to speak in exchange for a case of Fiji water, proving her knack for negotiation and her commitment to enriching the program.
Even during the pandemic, while FFT took a brief pause as events moved online, Marcyl’s connection to PJCC never wavered. As an active member and supporter of the center, she continues to be deeply involved, finding joy and community in online programs like her morning exercise classes and rabbinic lectures. To Marcyl, PJCC offers a lifeline, providing essential connection to others, especially during challenging times.
A member of PJCC’s Chai Society and Legacy Society, Marcyl’s dedication goes beyond volunteering. Her contributions reflect her belief in sustaining Jewish institutions for future generations. “I don’t take Jewish institutions such as my synagogue or the PJCC for granted,” she states, demonstrating her deep personal investment in the center and its future.
Marcyl’s legacy through Food for Thought continues to nourish the minds and hearts of PJCC members, fostering a space for curiosity, community, and connection. Her commitment underscores the profound impact that passionate volunteers can have on shaping and enriching their communities.
