The End and the Beginning

On Simchat Torah, we celebrate the conclusion of the yearly reading of the Torah—the Five Books of Moses—by chanting the final verses of Deuteronomy. Immediately afterward, we read from Genesis, symbolizing how our relationship with the Torah continues, year after year, in an unbroken cycle of learning and renewal.

A Celebration of Song and Dance

The joy of Simchat Torah is palpable in synagogues and community gatherings around the world. It’s common to see singing, dancing, and parading with the Torah scrolls, at both evening and morning events. This is a wonderful chance for everyone present to get up close to the Torah, which is sometimes referred to as a Tree of Life—sustaining, connecting, and inspiring anyone who forms a relationship with its teachings.
