A Day of Togetherness

Long ago, in early rabbinic times, Tu B’Av offered young women and men a chance to meet in a spirit of equality and unity. Women wore white garments—so no one could tell the rich from the poor—and danced in fields beneath the full summer moon, while potential suitors watched on. It was a moment to see one another beyond social barriers. Today, Tu B’Av continues to highlight our essential togetherness, reminding us that real connection transcends differences.

Why We Love Tu B’Av

  1. Celebration of Love: Whether you’re married, single, or somewhere in between, Tu B’Av lifts up the magic of companionship, romance, and friendship.
  2. Inclusive Joy: Historically, everyone dressed the same, and anyone could join in the dancing—an early symbol of the inclusive spirit we still value today!
  3. Fresh Starts: Falling just days after the solemn observances of Tisha B’Av, Tu B’Av is an opportunity to renew hope, savor joy, and open ourselves to new possibilities of love.

Simple Ways to Mark the Day

  • Share Gratitude: Write a note or send a message to someone who lights up your life—friends, partners, or family.
  • Dance with Friends: Whether you’re dancing in an actual circle or throwing your own living-room dance party, share the energy of ancient Jerusalem.
  • Learn Together: Explore Jewish ideas about love, companionship, and unity—through conversation, reading, or online classes.
  • Volunteer: Spread the love in your community by volunteering, offering kindness to neighbors, or doing a small act of tikkun olam (repairing the world).
