Israel’s 1977 elections marked not only a historic transfer of power from Labor Zionism to Likud but also a deep structural shift in the country’s social fabric and political identity. As Israel approaches high-stakes elections in 2026, many observers see strong echoes of that earlier transformation—the moment known as the Ma’apach (“The Turnover”).
Professor Magen serves as Director of the Jan Koum Israel Studies Program at Stanford’s Center on Democracy, Development, and the Rule of Law (CDDRL) and is Affiliated Faculty at the Taube Center for Jewish Studies.
