Tisha B’av (The Ninth of Av) is a day of mourning and fasting. The holiday commemorates various tragedies that befell the Jewish people throughout history, particularly the destruction of the two temples in 586 BCE and 70 CE.
We chant the Scroll of Lamentations, Megillat Eicha, to a haunting musical pattern. Eicha chronicles the tragic destruction of Jerusalem, yet ends with hopeful verses. Readers chant through the 5 chapters in turn, our many voices rising in remembrance. Yet, we find hope in sitting together.
