Monthly Digest
Issue 2 | September 2026 | Healthy Aging
September is Healthy Aging® Month, an annual observance created by Healthy Aging® Magazine to focus attention on the positive aspects of growing older and to encourage people to take stock of their physical, mental, social, and financial well-being. It’s a perfect fit for the PJCC’s Center for Healthy Longevity, which brings together fitness, brain health, social connection, and purpose to improve healthspan.
And there’s no better way to bring that to life than through a real story. So, this month, we’re handing the introduction over to one of the PJCC’s own “healthy agers,” Hadva Glickman, whose journey through loss, community, and movement shows exactly what healthy aging looks like in practice.
“I would like to share my story of how I found joy and regained my health and happiness after losing my husband of many years.
When my husband passed away in March 2023, I faced profound grief and illness. My daughter encouraged me to seek support, and I realized I needed joy and community again. I began coming to the PJCC daily and, little by little, re-engaged with life.
I love music and dancing, so I went to the PJCC for Zumba® and other social activities. When I took my first Zumba class, the joy didn’t come immediately. I took my daughter’s advice to ‘fake it till you make it.’ Now, when I am at Zumba or dancing, I am totally happy.
I noticed that many members didn’t know one another, so I started monthly birthday celebrations after Zumba. It’s become a chance for people to connect more personally, filled with stories, laughter, and a growing sense of belonging.
When you move and engage with others, your brain and body heal.”

Surprising Benefits of Group Exercise
When you join a fitness class, you expect to increase your stamina, build muscle, and break a sweat. But you might be surprised to learn that group exercise brings many non-physical benefits as well. The social atmosphere of group exercise is great for mental health. Research shows that exercising in a structured group lowers stress and significantly improves quality of life (American Osteopathic Association) as compared to those who exercise solo. Building relationships further increases motivation and accountability (Baylor College of Medicine) so overall you are likely to push yourself harder, plus you have the guidance of a qualified instructor.
Michele Mandell, PJCC Group Exercise & Pilates Manager, shares, “When you join group exercise classes you join a community of like-minded individuals, making connections, building confidence, and learning how to live a healthier, more active life. I joined my first group exercise class in 1984, and I’ve never stopped attending classes because I love the camaraderie, the challenge, and belonging to something that makes positive change in my life, and so many others’ lives.”

Live Long and Prosper: Take Charge of Your Healthspan
Since Healthy Aging goes beyond fitness and social connection, check out these other CHL offerings that add critical ingredients such as brain health, purpose, and more to the mix. As Dr. David Barzilai of Barzilai Longevity Consulting notes, “… the useful question is not which pillar wins in the abstract. It is which one you are personally weakest in right now (Harvard Health), because that is where your next improvement will pay off most.” The best way to extend your healthspan starts with what you do today.
Hear from Dr. Adrienne Green, MD and CEO of San Francisco Center for Jewish Living as she shares practical, evidence-based strategies for maintaining cognitive, physical, and emotional well-being. Explore key aspects of normal aging and the everyday choices that can help support lifelong brain health. This presentation offers a refreshing perspective: brain health is best supported by engaging in activities we genuinely enjoy and finding purpose and connection in daily life.
